Without warning, the crack of a gunshot vibrated through the every bone of Astrid's frame. Her mother's body jerked back, limp and helpless, like someone took scissors to the strings of a marionette. Crimson was painted across the burnt desert ground, its brushstrokes rapidly stealing the light from her mother's blue, blue eyes. Instead, they dimly reflected the grey sky above, orange flames licking the clouds. The agonised scream that ripped through Astrid's throat died amidst the sound of cheering from the other blood-splattered men.
In the boy's hand, the gun shook. Tears ran down his cheeks. But his mouth was a firm line and his expression held no compassion for the woman he had just killed. Those green eyes flickered up and down her mother's form mercilessly. It was as though he was almost proud of what he had done.
Astrid watched as, slowly, a small smile crept along his lips.
Then, the rain began to fall.

In which, instead of the Dragon Training happening over two weeks, it happens over a month-and-a-half.
Even though Snotlout's mean now, and a bully, Hiccup still hasn't forgotten when Snotlout was his friend first.
His only friend.
He's more observant than people give him credit for. He sees the misery clinging to Snotlout's every step, and he promises--he promises that he will save his cousin.
And death isn't an option.
