Charlie felt bad. He didn´t like letting people down, and he certainly didn´t like letting Mr. Ajayi down. He sighed, seriously annoyed with himself now.
When he walked past Mr. Ajayi´s desk at the end of the lesson, ready to leave the school day behind and change into his rugby gear, he slowly started feeling better. The prospect of seeing Nick always made him feel better. But even that felt tainted today, as if a dark cloud was trying to drown out the ray of sunshine in his life that was Nick. Charlie shuddered involuntarily.
“Anything I can help you with?” Mr. Ajayi´s voice was soft and sympathetic, and with a sudden uncomfortable feeling that he had never before felt in the presence of his arts teacher Charlie realized that all the other students had already left, leaving the two of them alone. He lowered his eyes to the ground and shook his head in silence.
This had always been his safe space.
It didn´t feel like that today.
