He snickered, shaking his head, but the smile slipped from his lips as they settled into a neutral line. He leaned on his cane to look up at the sky.
“I don’t. I mean, not really. People think it’s this majestic, all knowing force, but it’s a lot more like a child, always watching, always learning. When it connects with us, it tunes into every fiber of our being. It doesn’t know anything at first, we shape it with our every thought, our every use, every action. We’re its compass, moral or otherwise. You know what they say, what goes around comes around, that’s very literal here. I just…learned that a lot sooner than others do. They take from the world, so it learns to take. I give of myself, and only myself, so it gives in return…"
He glanced down at his hands, examining them carefully as they glowed faintly in the moonlight.
"...at least, that’s what I tell myself. That’s what I hope is the truth.”

Summary
The story starts in Rivendell, where Legolas arrives — not to be one of the Nine Companions, but because his life is at stake.
Legolas Greenleaf, born and raised as a warrior in Elvenking's courts and destined to lead his father's armies, has worked instead as his father's ambassador and lived an active and full life after the grievous accident that ended his promising career. During the last months, his symptoms that have been absent for over two centuries, start to emerge again, and Thranduil sends his only son to see Elrond if the healer could find a reason for the Prince's deteriorating health.
At the same time, the world is changing and the powers of evil gathering, far from the elven realms, but not too far to force them to get ready to take their side in what's coming.

Summary
Viktor is recruited in the most obnoxious way possible.
“Pay up,” Jinx orders Viktor happily, because she has just become slightly richer. It’s not the cogs she is interested in, but beating someone gives her such immense satisfaction, that cards - hazard - are just an extension of other ways she beats up other people. She indulges when she can, which admittedly is not that often.
The guy cannot even walk, but he looks like a smart cookie, so. Pay up, right?
