Out far in the water, a flicker of scales bursts from the water. A fin. Not one of a dolphin or a shark or a siren. No. One that sparkles and shimmers in the barely-there sunlight.
His breath catches in his chest every time he sees it surface. He feels faint as he sees arms the next time.
And when a face pops up in the water, when brown eyes lock with baby blue, well Max’s heart is as good as stopped.
A mermaid.
The air seems to still as the mermaid swims closer, weaving in between the waves. Their body is agile and lithe, cutting seamlessly through the choppy waters.
The closer they get, the more Max can make out their features–his features.
Max doesn’t even realize he’s standing in the water until the next wave comes in, soaking his feet to the bone. He doesn’t even care. He can’t rip his eyes away from the man in the water.
