Five days a week, Alex sits across from Henry for 58 minutes in the morning, rattling on about the virtues of the Tube and how efficient it is compared to the NYC subway, or his irrational dislike of Pret coffee, or a new bookstore he thinks Henry would like.
Five days a week, Alex and Henry leave the shelter together to take the bus home. They almost always end up standing for part of the way, occasionally bumping up against each other. Sometimes, Alex doesn't move away. It's nice.
Five days a week, Henry falls a little bit more in love.

He’d spent most of the week sitting on the floor with his laptop open on the table, typing away about absolute nonsense in between sessions and phone calls with immigration and a lawyer trying to see if it’s possible there’s any way in the world he can stay in America while this gets sorted. The good news is this doesn’t bar him from trying again and just returning when it all gets sorted. Not that that will be easy, but still. It’s a possibility.
He makes the absolutely foolish mistake, after pouring his second drink, of googling ‘marriage visa’ as if that will be the answer to any or all of his problems. Allows himself a brief, excruciating moment to imagine he has someone to marry and make that a reality.
But then…he does, does he not?

A very attractive man with sandy blonde hair, ocean-blue eyes looking into his, that seem to pull him in, making him feel like he might sink and drown in their depths. The man is wearing a blue cardigan that complements his eyes, and he has broad shoulders and a sharp jawline. He would look intimidating if it wasn’t for the softness that radiates from him. He’s undeniably beautiful.

Alex clears his throat, “Rough date,” he corrects. “Yeah it was… bad. As bad as it could get, really.”
