Summary
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
June's fingers absently comb through his hair. “I need you to wake up, you little shit.” Her voice is soft and fond and something else that Alex can’t put his finger on. It could pass as the answer to his question, but Alex isn't convinced June heard him at all.
“Yeah,” he drawls, prying her hands off his face and taking a very deliberate step backward. “You’re really freaking me out here, Bug.”
June's demeanor changes. Out of nowhere, her eyes go stern as stone—and there's none of that eerie softness in her voice when she speaks again. Instead, loud enough to make Alex's ears ring, she commands:
“Wake up.”
OR: Alex never makes it to Kensington because fate has other plans. Nothing like a coma to put things in perspective, huh?

Summary
He’s been pacing the length of the house for the better part of an hour now, restless after 48 hours of involuntary confinement. The blizzard outside is unrelenting, to the point that city officials have recommended staying indoors until conditions clear. It’s actually a “suggestion” that Alex might’ve tested if a) Henry weren’t taking the ‘sTaTe oF eMeRgEnCy’ so seriously and b) if not for the fact that their door has literally been frozen shut.
“Baby,” Alex says, deliberate and slow, because he knows it’ll earn him the long-suffering, utterly helpless expression it always does. “I’m crawling out of my skin here. Can you just… distract me?”
Or: In the wake of a snowstorm, Henry and Alex have been cooped up inside the brownstone for two days. It's cozy and comfortable and... Alex is wearing a hole in the carpet. Luckily, Henry knows exactly how to help him channel his nervous energy.

Patrick doesn't have an eye for art; he doesn't pay much attention to painting or sculptures. But he likes photography. Well, he likes a photographer in particular, anyway. The mysterious artist known only as D.R. — a black-and-white film photographer from New York — may have disappeared from the world years ago... but Patrick still treasures the one print he'd purchased during a business trip in the city. After all, it may have given him the courage to break his own heart, move to a city he'd never heard of, and meet the love of his life.
He hasn't thought about in years. That is, until he's picking up lunch at the café and something familiar catches his eye. The tone, the light — he'd know an original D.R. photo anywhere.
"Oh, this?" Twyla grinned, pointing to the frame on the restaurant wall. "David gave me that."

“Seems like my liege was caught in a situation where he’d rather the ground swallow him whole.” Pez nods towards a spot to the side, and Alex follows his gaze. He spots Henry easily – a tall lighthouse of tousled blond hair – talking to a girl who is clearly into him. His expression looks perfectly polite, but he’s subtly leaning away, and he looks tense.
So, Alex makes an impulsive decision.
Whatever happens, this is going to be fun.

Or: Alex is so very definitely straight, so pretending to be Henry’s boyfriend to get him out of an awkward situation should just be a fun little pastime - except that he doesn't really want to stop, and he has no idea why. But maybe it's okay to not think too hard and let himself go with the flow, for once.

When he emerges out the other end of the alleyway and almost runs straight into a solid blue wall that wasn’t there last time he visited this area of town, Henry assumes his wandering thoughts have conjured an illusion. He blinks, and blinks again, but it’s still there: NORA’s unassuming back wall, the broken chameleon circuit now over thirty centuries out of date to blend into her surroundings the way she’s supposed to, her anomalous presence a wrench in Henry’s carefully laid plans.

Or, Alex is a Time Lord, and time is complicated; Henry keeps meeting him out of order, and it's been a while.

He would let the rich pavement and wide open highways take him home. Texas bluebonnet wild, cicada strong, sideways pampas grass floating freeways situated between wildfire season and the inevitable downpour of hail that tramples Mother Nature's roadside finger paintings.
But he fucking can’t.
Because New York City doesn’t have cicadas; it has cockroaches.
He can’t take the key around his neck and let it be a homing device—protective shield across his heart when he’s run out of air and the gas tank goes low.
Or, After the dust settles and the Brownstone becomes home, it should all be okay. So why does it all still feel so hard?
