Summary
Matsuda exhales slowly. He can’t bring himself to feel much of anything. He closes his eyes. What is a person to do when their fundamental understanding of reality is radically reversed? Matsuda doesn’t know and he doesn’t particularly want to find out. That probably makes him an idiot, but he doesn’t care. He was happier being an idiot that didn’t understand what was going on right beneath his nose.

“Fuckin’ Roger,” Mello growls, ripping off his coat and throwing it to the corner. “He’s a fucking prick,” He kicks the heavy dresser, sending it scraping across the floor a few inches.
“Yeah and?” Matt tilts his head, looking up at Mello as he flips his DS shut. “It’s not like you’ve dealt with him in a decade and a half,” He chuckles. Mello rolls his eyes.

Summary
“You’re smoking,” Mello says plainly. He stands about seven feet away, one hand in his back pocket, the other hooked on his belt loop. His right foot is planted firmly on the concrete sidewalk. His left knee is bent, tip of his toe tapping the ground.
He’s surrounded by a cloud of haze, mist blurring the edges of his skinny, boyish shoulders. The sky is grey. The typical city skyline is hidden behind a wall of fog, only windowed squares of muted yellow light float within it.
“Yeah?” Matt blows a ring of smoke. It’s thin like a chicken wire bracelet. It holds its shape for half a second, then separates at two points, becoming wisps of pollution in the already dirty air. “You’re surprised?”

Summary
“Ha,” Mello says flatly. “You’re a dick,” He crosses his arms and leans away, but he can’t contain the slightest smile starting to force its way onto his face.
“You’ve got an attitude,” Matt runs his tongue over the front of his teeth as he steps forward. Mello steps back, but the room is so small he immediately bumps into the half of a kitchen sink behind him. “I think that’s perfect for what I’ve got planned.”
“Planned?” Mello raises his eyebrows. “You- You actually-” He gasps. “You planned shit?” He drops his jaw in faux melodrama. “You… You’re not Matt… Matt would never-” He shakes his head. “You got off your ass and planned shit for once? You don’t need me to delegate every fuckin’ task? Wow, you’re not my Matt…” Mello laughs.
“Oh, no,” Matt steps forward again. He’s steel toe to toe with Mello. He hasn’t taken his boots off. “I think you’ll be taking orders from me today,” He bites his lip.
“Take off your fuckin’ shoes, apostle boy,” Mello looks away, but his cheeks are getting hot. It’s safe to say they probably look pretty pink to Matt.

Summary
Mello's chest goes tight, tighter then it’s gone in a long time. “You can’t fucking think I meant to not make it out in time,” His voice cracks as he speaks. “I’m not that fucking stupid.”
“You knew it was a possibility,” Matt shrugs. “I knew I might have to drag your ass out of rubble, not knowing if you were still breathing,” He speaks with neutrality, but his point is sharp. “I’m surprised you’re even on your feet right now, you were practically begging me to mercy kill you earlier.”
“Oh, fuck off,” Mello grits his teeth. “Shit malfunctions,” His memory is fuzzy now. The drugs explain the haze. They always do. It was just more obvious when his tolerance wasn’t so strong. “Think a bullet hit the back window so the frame didn’t let me make it through,” He mumbles. “I was trying to get out.”
“Yeah, I know,” Matt pops the current cartridge out of his console and flips in another one from his pocket in one smooth motion. “I was dragging you out.”

Maybe that bomb was about more than Kira... And maybe Mello just wants Matt to pick up all the pieces of him now.
