Summary
“Did you know the physiological effects of fear and arousal are much the same?” He leaned closer, inhaling the eucalyptus scent of her hair. Rook tugged weakly on the door handle, but he held firm. Emmrich could practically feel the heat of her blush radiating, even from behind her. “Shallow breaths.” He ran two fingers up her spine, moving her heavy curls over her shoulder before pressing them to the pulse point just below her jaw. “Elevated heart rate.” The beat pounded below his fingertips perfectly as he tightened his grip on her neck and leaned closer to kiss the nape of her neck. A small whimper escaped her lips. He grinned against her skin. “Involuntary sounds.”
“Emm…” she whispered, trembling.
Emmrich used his grip on her throat to spin her to face him, caging her smaller body against the door. “Dilated pupils,” he observed. “My sweet Renya..." He enjoyed the way she had to crane her neck to look him in the eye. “When you learned that it was I who cornered you in the Necropolis all those years ago, did it change how you viewed the memory?” He leaned in to run his teeth along her delicately pointed ear. “Does it excite you now, little rabbit?”

Summary
“I thought you disapproved of me. Polite to me only because a gentleman is always polite. But now I know.”
He could only raise his voice to a hushed whisper. “What do you know?”
“That when I touch you,” She held him captive by staring directly into his eyes, “your pupils dilate.”
She was unarmed and yet had cut him clean open from head to tail. Excavated him more thoroughly than if she had stuck that cruel hand of hers into his rib cage and pulled out his organs. How long had she been able to read these secrets on his face? These traitorous tics and signs that only living flesh could betray, and so were blind spots in his expertise. Strange. How strange that a merchant of death could read desire.
“Ah, and what is this?” He realized that despite her sinister tone, she was being playful, as she cocked her ear towards his chest. “Your heart just skipped a beat.”

“I mean, people know lullabies, I suppose. But that one…it’s not quite Mary Had a Little Nug, is it? It’s…a Nevarran song. For Nevarran babies.”
“Which mine would have been,” Emmrich whispered. “Had I had them.”Emmrich shares secrets; Rook indulges a fantasy.

Even going so far as to decline the opportunity of a lifetime to study and teach ancient history and magic within the halls of the Grand Necropolis with the honored title of Mourn Watch.
Of course she never could have predicted the dapper Proffessor Emmrich Volkarin and his determination to show her the true Nevarra and the home it was always meant to be.

Summary
Convincing the Inquisition of her innocence was hard enough when she was newly marked, let alone a month after fleeing from their custody. Ophelia Trevelyan has no wish for history to remember her as just one more mage to ruin the world, but when her choices are stay and die or run and live, she knows which option to pick. She doesn’t know how she’ll convince the Inquisition to believe her this time, but maybe closing the rifts and making friends with them all is a start.
Until closing the rifts becomes less about proving her own innocence and more about saving the world one rift at a time. Until becoming friends with them means starting to love them.
A story in which the Herald flees from the Inquisition, winds up right back with them, and somehow finds happiness throughout all the trials to follow.
