As he packs to move out of his Institute-assigned apartment, Ambrosius reflects.
‘Hey,’ Bal says softly, and Ambrosius realizes he must look pensive. ‘I was just kidding. I love that you kept all this stuff.’
‘Oh. Yeah, I know,’ he says. He fiddles with the photo reel. ‘It’s just—it’s—all these memories feel kind of… tainted, now. Not—not the you part, but—’
He breaks off, rubbing his fingers over his eyes, unsure how to explain himself. Because truthfully, it’s hard to look at these things, to think of how young and happy they were, how much they adored each other, and know not only what they were working in service of, but what he’d later do to Bal, too. He wants to cling to these memories but he’s not sure he deserves them. He wants to feel that way again, but it’s hard to look at these photos and not think about the parts of their foundations—the way they met, the things they wanted for themselves back then—that were built on lies.

His hair had grown significantly in his weeks away, it hung just past his ears and had a subtle curl to it, it took all of Viktor’s strength not to reach up and swirl his fingers in the strands. Even more of a surprise was the thick yet well kept beard that Jayce was sporting. He had almost never seen Jayce with more than 5 o'clock shadow and bed head, this was much more rugged than the councillor that he was so used to.
