    Summary

Paul is reading through the newest draft of Sally's book when Percy comes up to him and asks if he can take Estelle down to the water. He raises an eyebrow at him. “You don't really need my permission for that, Percy. I'm not exactly concerned about either of you drowning.”

Percy rolls his eyes good-naturedly. “Come on, I just need somebody to hold her. I'd wait for Annabeth to do it, but she and mom always take forever getting groceries.”

“Oh, is big brother showing off his Son of the Sea God skills?” Paul teases. “Going to have your hands full, huh?”

Surprisingly, Percy looks horrified to the point of being ill. “Of course not,” he says earnestly, and for some reason he sounds like he's apologizing. “I'd never do anything like that around her. I promise.”

Paul frowns and closes his laptop. “If that's the case, why do you need somebody to hold her?”

“Well, obviously I can't hold her.”

    Paul's blood turns to ice.

    *********

Paul and Percy have a talk. They talk about trust. They talk about danger. They talk about Estelle. But maybe most importantly they talk about love.

"Are you three… gambling?" Celebrían asks, genuinely impressed by the audacity, twitching her ankle to dislodge the cards and coins Celeborn and the twins had laid out at the foot of the bed. "On what is, for all intents and purposes — my deathbed?"
Her father offers a watery laugh: "well, grief is sweeter chased by gold."

Or: The night before Celebrìan sails, her entire family crowd into her bedroom to talk, bake, grieve, get very drunk, tell stories, laugh, cry and simply be together from sundown to sunrise.

“I appreciate your spirit, Percy. You’re so,” he pauses, his hand so gentle, so kind, against Percy’s cheek, “So loyal. Such a perfect soldier.”

Luke drew away. “Just not a good hero.”

    Summary

It’s better this way. Or rather, it will be better this way. To rip every bit of flesh and bone that his mother has given him, to carve out one lung, one kidney, half his heart—to pack them up in a flimsy box and send them back to her, so that she may reuse them on her new child.

He would even sign it: With love, from the last Jackson son. And then he would forsake that name too, because what claim should he have on his mother’s maiden name, after she has moved on, taken up a new surname?

    -

Or, I was thinking abt how Percy and Sally perfectly encapsulate that mother-child bond that is soso prevalent in greek literature, and then I wondered how silly it would be for them to also mimic the belief of mothers forgetting their first children after their father dies and she moves on. Summary

    "We have to jump."

The cliff calls your name—beckons you forth with its high winds and the plunge it dares you to take. You whisper, "We wouldn't survive the fall."

    "Pray—that’s all we can do."

You choke on a laugh devoid of humor, listening to the clamber of monsters not far behind, and you wonder what would be a better end between this and them. "My parent has never answered."

    Their eyes meet yours.

"Then, pray to someone who will."

In which, Demigods pray not to the Ancient Olympians, but to the God who they know will answer.
