So, I gleaned a little more from Max’s 4x01 statement than was probably intended… or maybe not. I don’t think his feelings for Helen developed right after he confronted her in her office after Dr. Castro “resigned”. Exactly how long had he thought about being with Helen? That he thought about and didn’t know how to say it—all the sputtering stops when he tried to express himself…hmm.
What if Reynolds was spot on in his assessment of the ring he kept after his broken engagement as being not about love. When he tells Max how holding on to that ring was centered on his guilt, he had no idea that Max had been carrying his own sense of guilt since his first day in New Amsterdam.
I would never peg Max as a cheater. He’s a good man and would never do anything to betray Georgia, no matter what he felt for Helen. But they have too much chemistry for their relationship to be one that was always strictly platonic or even one-sided. Here is my take on the musings of Max’s guilty inner monologue.

“Yes. Isn’t that what I just said? For Christmas. You’d know this if you ever answered your phone.” There’s an impatient sigh that crackles against the receiver and then, “Helen, I know you prefer not to have to spend any time with your actual family, but you don’t need to be rude.”
Helen rolls her eyes. “Mum, I’m not being rude. I’m just…surprised, I—“
“I don’t know why you would be. You told me last week that you couldn’t make it back to London for Christmas because of this...partner of yours and work and—well, it seemed a reasonable decision to make. Besides, if you’re spending Christmas together, it must be serious. I’m looking forward to meeting him.”
