Summary
The smoke yanked her vision around, in more than one sense. Something-something, the grownups had taught her. Smoke made minds go numb. Made your eyes water and go all swimmy. That's what was happening here, so she'd been holding a wet rag to her nose and mouth, just like they had taught her, and it barely helped as ash infiltrated the fabric and inched the water out.
Her ears had not recovered from the blast. They kept ringing. It just hadn't let up.
Everything was on fire. Nothing in sight stood taller than her measly frame but that accursed inferno and the taunting shadows it cast.
The shopfronts lining the road were no more and the stalls she frequented with her friends and uncles had their stock as one with the dirt. Little porcelain figures, teacups, bowls; tea leaves and floral wreaths; wooden ladles, board games, pretty little pencil drawings; shattered or trampled or charred, ruined forever.
She wanted so badly to scream at the destruction. Fall to her knees, scream out a prayer, a few curses, and spend the rest of her time on this mortal coil sobbing and dribbling mucus onto her clothes.
She nearly did.

“I still cannot leave this place… Even at the end of all this, I cannot be free…” She tried to speak, but no sound travelled. Perhaps, in the timeless dark, she never actually spoke at all. “Am I not allowed to have a dream that is beyond my means…?”
