Before, that was where scales smoothed into skin. Now, they continued downwards. When John hooked his fingers in Nanaue’s waistband, he touched thin flaps of flesh that felt like fins. Nanaue didn’t have those usually either.
“I’m always the shark,” Nanaue corrected. “You’re closer to the shark.”

Hawks left the alleyway with a palm print burned into the side of his throat, a burner phone in his pocket, and a pain filled laugh bursting from his chest.
