Penelope is just thirteen the first time she almost tells Colin she loves him.
She has loved him for a whole year, ever since her horrid yellow hat flew clean off of her head and knocked Colin off of his bike. Penelope had apologised profusely through clenched teeth and tense shoulders. Then, Colin surprised her. He laughed. Not at her, but with her.
One year later and Penelope still hears that sound when she closes her eyes and settles into sleep. She may be young, but she isn’t stupid—this is love. This has to be love.

Every year, Colin and Penelope visit the same little Christmas market, and every year, they buy each other gifts there, going to greater and greater lengths each time to prevent the other from catching them in the act. This year, however, Colin is determined to make their first market together as Mr. and Mrs. Bridgerton something she will remember forever.
Just then, as though she can sense his presence, that invisible string that seems to stretch between them tugging at her attention, she looks up. And there’s that smile—the one that is only for him, that fills him with a sweet honeyed warmth even on this cold December evening.
He walks toward her, closing the distance between them in a few long strides and wrapping his arms around her, surrounding her with his embrace. She sighs happily and leans against him, her arms slipping around his neck.
“Good evening, Mr. Bridgerton,” she murmurs into his chest, her breath warm even through his coat.
He pulls back without breaking their embrace and gazes into those sapphire eyes before planting a gentle kiss on her lips and murmuring softly, “Good evening, Mrs. Bridgerton.”
