For one eternal moment, he regards her in silence. His eyes bore into hers, dark and intent, and his hand curls around the back of her neck. Tension thrums through the air between them, their lips a mere breath apart. In the midst of the crowded dance floor, they might as well be the only two people in the room.
And then he releases her, taking a step back, and Rhaenyra’s heart sinks. Once again, he’s going to falter at the fulfillment of his schemes. Once again, he’s going to leave her disappointed.
Only then the great hall erupts into chaos with a sudden scream and the ring of drawn steel. The celebratory crowd turns to a perilous press of bodies jostling for position.
Daemon’s hand closes around hers before they can be separated in the crush, and he speaks a single commanding word. “Come.”
