The world slowly stabilized around him. The walls were not black, but painted white. The floors had gray linoleum tiles, and a huge puddle of spilled coffee. Oh. Jean was in California, in the school dining hall, because he made a stupid impulse decision and did not know when to give it up, and thought that he could just get a job, and make money, and maybe be normal. Jean was about to learn what happened to people who fucked up at their jobs.

Jean needs money, so he gets a job working at the school dining hall. It’s a lot to manage work, exy, class, and a social life. But maybe this independence is what Jean needs in his life.
