When Merlin’s flat is found to be chock full of very toxic mould, he crashes on Gwen and Arthur’s sofa. But being in such proximity to his friends’ happy relationship makes him realise how much he has missed being touched and held the way they do for each other. He’s in for the worst week of his life, but the end might just make it worth it.

His own manky, humid, pond-stinking T-shirt hits him in the face. He catches it only on instinct, nearly gagging at the texture.
“Calm down, you clotpole,” Merlin says, because it’s only him, after all; only a human person dragging himself up to a standing position on his lanky long legs, until he’s hovering in front of Arthur, rolling his right shoulder and rubbing sleep out of his left eye with the left hand.
“What the fuck is a clotpole,” Arthur whispers, the sound failing downwards somehow, the way an inflatable thing sounds with the air draining out of it.
Merlin blinks at him. His hair, in close encounter, is sticky with pond water, and clustered over his forehead, and his eyes are still crusty. He reaches out and pokes one bony finger directly in the centre of Arthur’s chest.
“You,” he says.
