    Summary

    And as Jayce stands in his house in Northern Piltover, as he looks at himself in his mirror and looks at his aging body and the scars that cover it, as he thinks and thinks about the past and the people—the person—he shared it with, he can confidently say that he has never cared for Viktor.

    Jayce Giopara has never been in love. Maybe he never will be.

    Jayce Giopara is not in love with Viktor. Jayce Giopara is not in love with the Machine Herald.

    The Defender of Tomorrow has no interest in what the Machine Herald does and only cares that he doesn’t threaten the lives of the citizens of Piltover.

    Jayce doesn’t care about Viktor, or his life, or his well-being, so there is no reason for him to go down to Zaun, just because the Machine Herald hasn’t been seen in four months.

    Summary

    There's a moment— brief and terrible, where the impassive mask splits at the seams from the force of the blow, groaning and creaking under the weight of it before giving way with a thunderous rupture and clattering to the floor in a dented heap— in which Jayce catches the glimpse of skin, proof that a man lives beneath the Machine Herald's armor, and thinks nothing of it. Until, of course, the haphazard battle-smeared menagerie of cheekbones and hair and metal screwed into bone coalesces into the image of a face, gold-flecked eyes staring down at him from beneath dark furrowed brows, and then he feels suddenly, horribly sick.
    ——————
    The Machine Herald falls in the fourth year of the war, brought down in battle by a stray bomb aimed for the Defender of Tomorrow. Days later, Viktor wakes up in the Hextech laboratory with strange, inexplicable wounds and a gaping abyss in his memory. Which would be manageable, really, if only Jayce would tell him what the fuck was going on.

    Summary

    “Professor Talis?” the student calls, unsure if she should come closer.

    “Yes?”

    Both he and Viktor answer her at the same time without thinking. Jayce sucks in a sharp breath, prays the young girl hasn’t noticed it, and lets Viktor approach her with a smile. The hallway quickly fills with their voices; Jayce hears his husband’s patient tone as he answers all her questions without fail.

    -

    “Do you really think I don’t know just how much you like hearing people call me by your last name, Jayce?” he adds, quirking an eyebrow.

    Or, Jayce has some trouble hiding his possessiveness from his husband, and Viktor's teasing makes it even worse.

    “I’m inclined to agree,” Hoskel said, shaking his head. “Just think if they were running amok the town. We’ve taken kindly to Viktor for your sake Jayce, but the others?”

    “I am right here, you know,” Viktor said bitterly, not taking kindly to how they spoke of him like he was Jayce’s pet. He doesn’t understand what they mean that Jayce has “claimed” him, but he isn’t appreciating the way they’re meaning it.

    “The people of Zaun aren’t of immediate danger to us anyway,” Mel spoke now, and though Viktor has never really gotten along with her, he’s grateful for her usage of the proper title of Zaun. “And you should all place respect on Viktor’s name, despite his part of House Talis regardless.”

    “Thank you,” Viktor said, not quite understanding again what this talk of being a Talis, but he chooses to focus on Mel openly defending him. “And as Jayce previously mentioned, Hextech is not to be weaponised.”

    ~~~
    Jayce is possessive of Viktor and covers the man in the Talis House colors.
    Viktor doesn't realise though for seven years what Jayce is doing, but everyone else does.
    Summary
    So, either it was a trap, or it wasn’t. Either he went, or he didn’t go.
    A two-by-two decision matrix.
    If it was a trap, and he went, he’d have to fight. Probably at a disadvantage, given that Viktor would seize the opportunity to ambush him. If it was a trap, and he didn’t go, he’d get to spend a beautiful Sunday morning holed up in his office, tinkering with a project. If it wasn’t a trap, and he went, he would very likely save a life. And if it wasn’t a trap, and he didn’t go, he’d have to live with the fact that he’d killed his old friend by inaction.
    Risk assessment was so damn hard when it was Viktor on the line.
