  What if the ghouls were *literally* Abbey cats. They were already on the land the church bought for the Abbey because they heard it was haunted, and maybe the Papas found one while they were kids running through the woods, and they brought it home because *look how cute it is! Can we keep it?* and sister is reluctant but it's pretty good at driving off the predators in the woods, and it makes everyone happy so *sure, we can keep it*. But then they start feeding it and it's like *oh shit this is the life* and the next day there's like five of them sitting in the garden, waiting for breakfast.
