"Lady Furina!" Clorinde calls, several paces behind her.
"Just Furina will do," and Furina laughs with all the freedom of a caged bird, clenching at her sleeves and overcome by the cold that breaks through the warmth of her lost comfort. “We – I – am not asking you back as a pilot. Jean, you were one of the most experienced pilots in the program, and…” He began to whisper as if he was sharing a vital secret, even though the sound was exactly the same on Jean’s end, “We have a new class of recruits. All volunteers.”
Jean rolled her eyes, “I’m not becoming a teacher.”
“You wouldn’t be. You’d be joining them as a senior student.” Varka simply shot back.
“What?” Jean asked.
“It was proved a while ago, by Al-Haitham himself, that even pilots who have drifted alone, and…” His voice softened, “Lost a co-pilot – they can still drift without any interference or increased risk of brain trauma.”
“That’s…” Jean’s thoughts trailed off.
“You can pilot again, Jean.” Varka said, that same spark of hope in his voice that felt nostalgic, soulful. Varka’s hopeful tone still sounded like that of a child’s.

Or, Jean becomes a Jaeger pilot, experiences loss, and has to grow again.

Her only real concern to think about right now was the message Kafka left. Himeko knows the Stellaron Hunter is one for cryptic messages—all the hunters are—but it frustrated Himeko to no end. Breaking up with your girlfriend only to show up years later through a holographic recording was definitely disrespectful, who would even go out of their way to pronounce Himeko’s name like that—syllable for syllable. No contact for god knows how long, then a conversation about strictly business where she acts like she doesn’t know her?
It was rude, as far as Himeko knew.

Kafka misses Stelle. So, so much. She misses the days when she could just kiss her little puppy and feel her snuggling into Kafka for more. She misses the days when Stelle would just run up and hug her from behind, burying her face in the crook between Kafka’s neck and shoulder. But those days… those days are over. Her ‘little puppy’ is now her ‘little wolf’. She doesn’t even know if she can call Stelle hers anymore. So, when Stelle tells her those three, tender words, whispers them to her with her lips brushing Kafka’s ear, then asks Kafka to meet her again, how can she refuse the invitation coming from her little Stelle’s lips? She just hopes they can, if not completely, go back to what they were before, at least a bit, even if their roles in the world have changed… and what works better in fixing relationships than a moonlit night spent with that one woman who makes her feel things she shouldn’t be feeling about people?
