“I do not know what Swordfather looks like in his physical form. But I smell woodsmoke.” Mizu inhaled deeply. “Metal in the air, ready to be made new. Grit between my fingers. Gratitude in my heart.”
“Ah.”
“For you…I suppose I do see some of that boy you were.” She could sense Taigen shift next to her. “The taste of metal on my tongue itself, bloodied mouth. An overwhelming urge to destroy you.”
Taigen snorted a laugh.
“It wasn't a joke,” Mizu told him with a frown; though the corners of her mouth threatened to betray her.
“I know,” he said, and she could hear the smile in his voice as well.
AU. Mizu loses her sight to the fire that claims her mother's life. Swordfather takes her under his care, though there are some things he cannot teach her—like how to wield a blade for revenge.

I set the fire, Mizu had confessed thickly into Taigen's ear, when their mouths were still filled with ash, eyes half-sealed with tears from acrid smoke.
Did you have a choice? Taigen had asked as a response, hauling them forward another step across a bridge, toward another life.
Mizu had fallen silent—so silent that Taigen lifted his chin in worry that he had drawn his final breath without Taigen's permission.
No, the not-samurai had told him then. I did not have a choice.
And Taigen believed it.
Fool.
Post season 1 canon divergence.
Taigen crosses the bridge to pursue happiness with Mizu instead.
