In a dream, when Lucifer asked, “what can survive the Anti-life?” Matthew bought time, inspired an answer, or both. And so, Dream’s answer was: “hope.” And Lucifer had no response because they dream of going back home to the Silver City; clean from the ash, the ache from their wings gone, and warm again. Dream had always known of their secret, hated hope, and that was why he won.
Except, Matthew never gets the chance. So Dream loses his freedom. Again.
Or: Hob knows that he’s going to have a very long day when a raven tells him that they’re going to Hell, like it’s a roadside destination, for a bullshit rescue. For a “friend” that never even told him his name. Naturally, Hob agrees to it.
