There were hands on his arms, pushing him onto his back. Aang and Toph’s worried face swam before him. A shiver ran through Zuko’s spine as he spotted the shadow hovering behind them. It had no face, barely a form, but it was grinning.
“Come on.” Aang and Toph each grabbed and arm, pulling him onto his feet. “Are you all right? Can you walk?”
Zuko wanted to warn them. Wanted to tell them to run. But Aang’s hands on his arms barely registered, and he couldn’t get his tongue to move, much less his feet. He tied - he tried - to lift his hand… but his body… he couldn’t feel anything, it was all pins and needles. All he could feel was menacing cold emanating from the shadow looming over him.
When Aang, Toph, and Zuko decide to explore a long abandonned ancient sun warrior's temple on Ember Island, Zuko ends up getting shot in the neck with poisoned darts. It gets worse from there.

Zuko wakes up the first time it happens to the smell of burning flesh. He at first thinks it’s just a lingering memory, the vestiges of a nightmare he’s had many times, but then he hears the shouts and clanging of metal that accompanies it.
The telltale signs of a fight, right outside his door.
So of course he does the sensible thing and rushes toward the commotion without a second thought, still in his loose bedclothes and bleary-eyed from sleep. He practically falls out of the door, stumbling right into the middle of both the hall and the battle waging within it.
At this point, Zuko's no stranger to attempts on his life. He can handle it.
Or five times Zuko's friends save him from an assassination attempt, and one time they're almost too late.
