Summary
“Did you know if you put a frog in water and slowly bring it to boiling, it won’t hop out?” Chris is chattering as Buck makes a quick dinner while Eddie argues with his gas company on the phone. He can hear the occasional swear word in Spanish as his voice raises. Eddie doesn’t like to raise his voice around Christopher – the very thought makes Buck want to kiss him full on the mouth – so he decided to take it to the living room while Chris sits with his homework in the kitchen and Buck cooks.
“Hmm?” Buck asks, unable to fully pull himself out of Bobby’s baked mac and cheese recipe. It took him years, but he finally convinced the man to write it down. Bobby’s handwriting was juvenile at best on a good day, but this was nearly unreadable. Buck wonders if he did that on purpose. “Frogs?”
“Yeah!” Chris states. “My teacher said that if you put a frog in a pot, you have to make sure it’s not immediately boiling. You put them in water and then slowly raise the temperature and they won’t realize what’s happening. Then once they realize, they have no place to go. They can’t jump out.”

"Dr. Copeland doesn’t respond right away. He can see her mulling over his words, her expression settling on something pensive. “From the moment I met you, I knew you were someone who feels strongly. It shines from you, I can tell how much you love your sister and your family and everyone in between. I know how much you feel anger when people aren’t treated probably and joy when they are. You have the capacity to experience everything as loudly as possible, which is wonderful and terrible. If those parts of you are amplified and full for the world to see, why would it be different that you would feel sorrow and grief the same way?”"

Summary
“You don’t know that!” Buck says, his eyes growing wild. “You don’t get to tell me when someone is dead. You don’t get to tell me to give up! I will never stop trying!”
“I know Buck! And that’s what terrifies me!” Eddie shouts, getting up in his space.
Buck can feel Eddie’s breath on his face. His rage filters out when he sees the pain etched in the lines of his once-partner’s face. “What does that even mean?”
“How can you not know?” Eddie cries, shaking his head and stepping away. He runs his hand down his face and turns away from Buck. Buck hates it. He wants Eddie to turn back around, so he can see his face, and yet… he waits. “God, Buck.” Eddie breathes. “How can you not know by now?”

"Buck thinks somewhere in his hazy brain that this is a good idea. “Did you know, that the word fuck has multiple uses? I’m planning on employing multiple tonight.”
“Yeah he is,” Eddie says with a grin, lifting a fist out for Athena for bump.
“Yeah, I’m not doing that.” Athena states, shifting her weight so her hand’s on her gun." -

Summary
“No getting out of it now.” Bobby’s steady voice makes him flinch.
“We literally haven’t moved.”
“You could run,” Bobby says with a shrug. “But then you’d have to deal with Athena.” He steps into the RV.
Turning around, Buck sees Athena standing at the doorway, her hand still in the air. When she catches his eye, something in her expression shifts. He’s seen that expression before. Typically, she uses it on people who are about to flee arrest.
I fucking dare you.
Sighing, Buck gets on the RV.

After a call that is almost his last, Buck is having a hard time. He’s avoids his family, his friends, and everything in between. When Bobby suggests they go on a road trip, he almost laughs. But what’s worse? He actually says yes.
Or: The Post 5A recovery road trip fic literally no one asked for, but I wrote anyway.

Summary
“I’m in Abby’s house!” Buck whispers urgently to the phone and the busyness on the other side of the line stops. “And she’s here!”
Eddie doesn’t answer right away. Buck gets it, it’s fucking crazy. His brain hasn’t shut off since he woke up. Eddie deserves some time.
“And…?”
Out of all the things that Eddie could’ve said, that was the least likely in his head. He brings the phone away from his ear to make sure he called the right person because that is not how Eddie would react. Eddie hates Abby – Buck knows he hates Abby no matter how poorly he tries to hide it. Eddie’s never been particularly good at his hiding his disdain for Buck’s girlfriends, and now when Buck needs him to ratchet it up to eleven?
Nowhere to be found. Eddie has put Buck on a raft and pushed him out to sea.
“What do you mean, ‘and?’” Buck hisses in the phone. “That’s not enough life changing information for you?”
“Buck, why would it be life changing to be sleeping at the house you own with your wife?”
*
Or, Buck thinks too hard about couches, his past relationships, and the stupid alarm that just won’t shut up.

Summary
The corner of Buck’s mouth quirks. “Thanks for picking up my call,” he whispers.
Eddie feels a sudden pang in his chest at these words. He gives in to the urge to reach out and brush his fingers over Buck’s forehead, just gently enough that he could deny doing it if he really had to.
“I’ll always pick up,” he whispers back.
