Although he was, nominally, as utterly without fortune and ancestry as she, his influence among their classmates was already as pervasive and poisonous as the parasite he’d so carefully wrapped his asters in. She could not afford to alienate him—yet—and so approached each interaction with as much dispassion and polite detachment as she could manage.
