“Good afternoon, then, Gandalf the Grey, though I might wish that it was a better afternoon for you than it is! Before I came across you it was a very fine afternoon, but perhaps it is only a good afternoon if you can be good on it. I am Belladonna Took, at your service, until I find your afternoon better than it is at the moment.”
The story of an unusual friendship, and the way it shaped two most unusual people.

Summary
Dear Dreamflower, I hope you like this! In my personal canon, the events of That Hideous Strength take place around 1950, during the beginnings of the Cold War, which Lewis predicted frighteningly well. This is the story of how Grace Ironwood came to be Ransom's personal physician.
New notes, August 2022:
I wrote this story approximately 13 years ago, and was reminded of it by a delightful thread about the series on Tumblr. I first read the series in my teens, when I knew approximately nothing about the pre-World War II period, and when I wrote this story at the age of 39, I was still in that headcanon. Since then, I photographed the play Bent for Theatre@First, I read a whole lot of the Maisie Dobbs series, watched the DC Wonder Woman movie with Gal Gadot, started following Celia Lake's blog as she discusses how she had to nerve herself up to move her books into the late 30s, and just generally learned more about the period between the world wars, and how they led into the Cold War. And now here we are in 2022, begging our fellow citizens to keep it from happening again. Again.
Thanks for reading.
