Summary
Walking made the world shift and sway and fall away. Even thinking was hard these days, any effort to keep his thoughts in order thwarted by the smallest of movements, or by the brush of an unwelcome hand through his hair. There was truly nothing Xie Lian could do but endure, but he had spent centuries perfecting that skill. Eventually things gave. They rotted or crumbled or grew bored, and he would still be there.
When the mortal that held his hair with a dirty fist decided he would rather gamble him away than keep him, Xie Lian could only hope that this was what would happen.

Feng Xin shudders, "Well, she's not nice to me! At all!"
Xie Lian looks at Feng Xin like she's a bumbling puppy who's also inhaled a ton of sawdust; sweet, but also incredibly stupid. "Feng Xin, she's not nice to anyone."

So there was this jar, and it had so much peanut butter still in it, and when his fox nose scented it and didn’t catch any poison or spoilage, what was he supposed to do? Not avail himself of this gift? No. He shoved his delicate little snout right in there and got to licking, but, you know… Elegantly. Definitely not snarfing and making horrible little fox sounds and rolling around on the ground while he went ham on the jar. Sure, he had to work a little bit to get at the last of it, but anything good is worth working for, right? So finally, triumphant, no longer starving, and maybe a little thirsty now from eating half a cup of peanut butter in about two minutes, he’d tried to remove his head from the jar.
