Summary
When Merlin is caught trying to help a wrongly convicted man, Arthur claims responsibility and takes the punishment for him. While Merlin struggles to process what Arthur has sacrificed for him, Arthur finds himself having to reconsider his relationship with his father, his kingdom, and the people he has sworn to protect.

The guards took this as their cue, and on Uther’s order Merlin felt his shirt torn from his body with a sound all too much like tearing flesh for comfort. Stood only in his worn brown breeches and weathered boots, he could feel for the first time how fiercely the sun beat down on his bare skin: how exposed he was, with nothing but air between his unprotected back and the whip.
And he was terrified.
It was then that another voice was raised above the crowd: one voice, in all that discontented hush, that dared to ring out above the rest.
“Father! It was me. I ordered him to do it.”

Arthur could see his father glaring down - face red and eyes narrowed as he looked at Merlin with clear distaste.
"Once this over, sorcerer...I’ll burn you."
"You’ve already tried that," Merlin’s voice answered and Arthur had to bite his fist to keep from making any noise. “You need to accept you can’t kill me… Hand me that blanket, please.”
“I’m sure there must be some method… Beheading?”
“No, we tried that.”
“Hanging?”
“I just sort of... Swung there, remember?”
There was another pause.
“I should have made you keep that dragon below the castle so I could feed you to it.”
“Kilgharrah? He won’t eat me, but if you want to torture me than making me listen to his nonsense for an hour might do it.” Merlin said and there was a soft sigh from the other end of the room. “I’m glad you agreed to help me though. Usually I have to do the grunt work of saving Arthur myself.”
“I can’t wait to kill you.”
Or
Uther finds out about Merlin’s magic, but can’t seem to kill him. Merlin is just trying to protect Arthur. They become a begrudgingly effective duo. Arthur doesn't understand why they think he isn't noticing this.

Charles can't imagine that Edwin is dead. In fact, he refuses to believe Edwin’s dead.
Charles needs Edwin to be alive. There is no world in which Edwin Payne is dead and Charles Rowland is alive.
It’s the reason Charles, after waking up alone on a ship filled almost entirely with guys bigger and tougher than him, had scratched and bit and fought, even though he’d long had his sword and his baton taken away.
Charles had exactly one hour of freedom after he woke up to fight like that, because they’d pinned him down and locked an iron collar around his neck, and his ability to escape after that went down to absolutely fucking zero.
(When Esther Finch's ship raids theirs, Charles and Edwin are separated. Edwin will do anything to get back to Charles and save him from Esther. Meanwhile, Charles finds solace in Monty, Esther's son, who he finds is as trapped as he is.)
