Summary
Hermione kissed Astoria roughly. The taste of iron lingered on her tongue. “I love you,” she whispered.
“Don’t toy with me –” a warning in her tone.
And so she said instead, “And it’s the right thing to do.” At this, Astoria’s shoulders slumped, resignation clear in her posture. A white hot poker pierced through Hermione’s chest.
Then again, it was not as if she could make much of a defence - Astoria laid on the moth-eaten chair of her parents’ practice. They sat under the glare of a dental lamp powered by magic and nothing else. Several of the dusty cabinets have turned into ash from a fire she started. Hermione’s love was a cold thing.
Then shaky hands wiped away the tears from her eyes. Something sticky clung to her face instead, and Astoria’s expression was all pained apology.
“It’s not that,” she whispered tiredly. “You would love a dying woman?”

“Harry, I’m -“
“Don’t say you’re fine,” Harry says, his tone more biting than he was aiming for. “Or that you’re sorry. They aren’t true.”
Hermione stills in his arms. Anger is a sickly, corrosive thing, and his is worse than most. Harry curses himself with all the terrible words he knows. And he can apologize, sure, but he doesn’t trust his own voice anymore. Instead, he presses her closer to him, hoping to hell she understands the apology in his embrace. Her heartbeat reverberates against his torso, and he relishes the sensation - the proof of life.
He feels her sigh, practically hear her internal debate in that little gust of air. “I don’t know what to tell you then.”
