I will admit that at first my feelings were less tender than irritated. I thought her, in fact, a braggart of the worst sort. During our first conversation she enquired casually as to my tons burthen; “325,” said I. “Oh!” said she, “mine is 372. And what is your length,” she asked; “102 feet,” said I. “Oh, how interesting!” said she, “mine is 105 feet. And I believe I am broader in beam as well.” She then asked about my armament, and feigned surprise to discover that she was the better armed. I thought I had never met a more smug and odious ship.

Summary
Francis Crozier is the newly made co-head of a recently academised school deemed to ‘need improvement’. To survive his first year there, he’s going to have to work alongside his well-dressed and insufferable co-head, James Fitzjames, as they battle corporate red tape, stressed teachers, a dilapidated school building, and an absent Executive Head.
Oh, and then there’s the school’s latest student - a girl toeing the line of permanent exclusion, determined to get there. Not to mention her father, who may yet bring a whole new world of troubles to Erebus Academy…

Fitzjames held his tongue for a long moment, as he attempted to find a response behind his teeth. "Unfortunately," he eventually answered, "I believe his plan may have some merit." [...]
Franklin let out a long-suffering sigh. "Yes," he replied. "I do concede that you may be correct, though his words of fairy tales unnerved me. We must not go into the unknown chasing fiction, but we cannot go there seeking nothing, either. I have always known Crozier to be a pragmatic and conscientious bear—if he is making reference to legends, as it were, then he must have quite a strong reason to."

Summary
In 1831 James briefly decides to crossdress and play at being a woman - which turns serious when he meets one Lieutenant Francis Crozier and the two decide to marry before eventually moving on with their naval careers.
Now, over a decade later and stuck on the same expedition, their shared past is nothing but a liability and source of enmity for them. Knowing one another’s secrets leads to an uneasy truce, and the chance to get to know one another again.
