“Yeah, well,” She started, looking at everything but him. “You’re always on Dustin’s case about batteries and the walkies…figured you’d wanna know.”
“Uh huh.” Steve may have been foggy from his nap, but he wasn’t stupid. Her act of disinterest was just that. An act. She wouldn’t look at him for more than a few seconds before her gaze drifted down to her feet, then to the side bush, then back to him. Never quite looking him in the eye, more like glazing over him in general.
Which said a lot about the girl who looked monsters in the face and made grown men cry.

“Wait!” Chigiri’s hand grabbed him before he could take another step.
The truth was if Kunigami had stopped things a mere five minutes ago, Chigiri wouldn’t have bat an eye. He’d be frustrated for sure, but he’d be level headed enough to know that escalating things in a very, very public place wasn’t the best decision.
He was too far gone to realize he’d fallen for Kunigami’s bluff.

Eddie had just finished storing the remaining three pizzas in the oven when Wayne said, “Didn’t know you and the Harrington kid were close.”
Eddie accidentally slammed the oven door on his hand. “Shit,” he said for more reasons than one.
“Is he gay?”
“Wayne.”
“Subtly, sorry,” he corrected. “Does he like Abba?”
“Wayne!” Eddie said as he shook the pain from his hand.
“Was that not our code word, fuck’er you yellin’ at me for?” Wayne said, confused.
It was their code word, one that Eddie had the joy of personally coming up with, but they hadn’t used it since he was thirteen.

All in all, the words “sleep” and “Steve Harrington” didn’t often go in the same sentence. So when he found himself in the most comfortable, most deep, mind numbingly peaceful sleep he’s had since…ever really, the last thing he was going to do was question it.
His thoughts were soft, and for once in his life his body felt safe.
Steve felt safe.
Which would explain why he hummed in annoyance when the bed moved beneath him.

“You okay, man?” Eddie asked when Steve stayed quiet.
“Yup.”
“You sure?”
“Yup.” But it sounded shaky even to Steve’s ears. Tears fell, and when they came with sniffles and small tremors that settled along his shoulders, he didn’t bother stopping them.
He was just so. Damn. Tired.
There was a shuffle to his right before he heard the passenger door open and close, and for a moment, Steve thought that was it. That Eddie was going to leave him to his own devices and head home. Occasional patters came down on his windshield as the rain eased and made way for the cool October night. Maybe camping out in his car wouldn’t be so bad if the storm stayed like this.
There were two soft taps of knuckles against the driver window before the door opened, a vague thought crossing Steve’s mind when he remembered he forgot to lock it.
A ringed palm hovered beneath the steering wheel, just under his gaze and in a voice, softer than it’d been since he arrived, softer than Steve thought he’d ever heard it be, Eddie said, “Why don’t we get you outta this rain, pretty boy?”
