He had lost. The boy, Takao, he recalled numbly, stuck out his hand at him. His head was reeling, voices screaming at him inside his head. He looked down at the hand, then remembered you were supposed to shake hands if offered.
He smiled. He couldn’t stop it, he smiled back, though his mind… was screaming louder and louder. He wasn’t sure what was the audience and what was… everything. Balkov. His father. His mother. As Takao was swamped by his teammates, he pulled back, backing away some steps, watching them, before turning around.
He looked at his teammates. Their faces were blank, but deep within their eyes, he thought he saw what he had felt upon the previous loss. They were looking at him as if he was already dead. Swallowing thickly, he slowly raised his gaze towards Balkov. The director was visibly seething, his fists clenching and his knuckles white.
