Canvassing on a successful campaign will show Padmé Amidala that they share similar interests and that will be enough to win her over once the semester ends and she’s no longer Anakin's TA—hypothesis.
So Obi-Wan Kenobi was a safe choice. A stellar choice.

Summary
Every time Anakin tries to tell someone about Obi-Wan Kenobi, they don't believe him. Saying My boyfriend goes to another school is basically saying I'm insecure about being single and am lying to look cool to teenage ears.
Fast forward ten years, and the now Kenobi-Skywalker couple is invited to the wedding of one of Anakin's old high school buddies. When Obi-Wan finds out exactly why Anakin is hesitant to go, and the depth that it's impacted his self-confidence, he gets a little...well.

“We’re not sacrificing a virgin to the dragon,” Viktor said in exasperation.
“Well what would you do?!” the mayor demanded.
“I’m going to go talk to it,” Viktor said reasonably, and got up from his seat and went to do just that.
