There’s a nudge at his hand, a careful tap that finally makes him look up for the first time since they got there. Evan wipes his face hastily, trying to sniffle up the water in his eyes before anyone can see. He doesn’t want to cry, but sometimes he just can’t help it.
Because that’s his brother. That’s his big brother, in a hospital bed, with dark smudges under his eyes and a really bad cough that keeps getting worse, but he’s smiling at Evan like it’s all going to be okay.
All Evan heard was the machine. He counted the sounds, hoarded them, and wished he could just sit there and listen to the proof of his brother’s heart beating forever.

“Danny,” he can’t avoid the sob that crawls out of his mouth, all his strength leaving him in light of who is on the other end of the line, “Maddie needs us.” There’s a soft thump down the line, then a muffled curse, before Buck hears shuffling.
