The morning frost thaws quickly under the sun's waking rays. The light crawls across the cross, white giving way to the dulled green underneath.
The forest is silent. Just as it always is. No birds sing morning greetings. Any critters that dare cross the undergrowth are careful not to make a sound.
In this forest, in this world, life has learned to hide.
It's a fact that Tommy has been forced to learn the hard way. His body, once soft and unblemished, now holds permanent reminders of how cruel this wide world really is.
It's nothing like the Valley. Where avians branch tree to tree, chattering and laughing, waking the neighboring flocks. Where squirrels are so bold as to crawl into your nest and burrow for warmth in the winters. Where the food is plentiful and the struggles are limited.
The Valley is home. Tommy misses his home more than anything.
