"A second thought rose unbidden in Daniel’s mind: the idea that the part of his life that he had always chalked up as a complete failure, as a time when he struggled to hold down work and human connection of any kind, may have actually been underpinned by something akin to love. That understanding took his breath away, and he nearly collapsed with how much he suddenly wanted it to be true. Not just love. Reciprocated love. Someone loved me through the years I was most broken, some wild thing inside him howled."
___The interview ends, but there’s no rest for the weary for Daniel, and before he knows it he’s dragging his chronically ill body through another investigation of the past (this time his own). Meanwhile, Armand’s mask has fully slipped after Louis’s departure, allowing more of his emotions to seep through to Daniel than ever before.
Something fragile and tender lies under all the buried trauma, broken logic of the five laws, and decades old anger, if Daniel and Armand can only find it.
