It was all too easy to imagine they were sitting among different trees on an island so very far away. Maybe that’s what led her to keep talking past the pleasantries. Maybe that’s why she told her about her mom and her sister and an old man she never called dad but wished she had.

The only thing putting you at ease is your tough-looking neighbor. Bartolomeo’s been keeping an eye out for you since you moved in, and he swears he’ll beat any creep to a pulp for you if he catches them. It’s sweet, really — like having a friendly rottweiler next door.
