Summary
John Shaw Torrington had been dead for three days, and he had been alone.
Alone, for seventy-two hours in the dark and the cold.
Alone, and abandoned on a barren island covered in rocks and not much else, for four thousand and three hundred minutes, if he had done his mental divisions correctly. He didn’t have a pencil, nor paper. He couldn’t double-check.
He had sat upon the top of his rocky grave, leaned up against the plank of his grave-marker, with his knees tucked up. Arms around his legs, a bony makeshift pillow to lean upon as he waited. He didn’t feel the biting chill of the wind, but wrapped around himself protectively, regardless.
Still— he had watched on silently as his fellow crewmates lowered John Hartnell’s coffin into the ground.
