Summary
“You’re here,” he said and Gwen was too excited to hear his voice again to be concerned about the way his words slurred together. “What‘re you doing here?”
“I’m here to help you, of course. You haven’t been well, Merlin.”
Merlin looked up at her with eyes shining from fever. “Gaius would’ve taken care of me. You didn’t have to come all this way, Mum.”
Gwen’s hand froze mid-sweep in Merlin’s hair. “I- what?”
-
When Merlin falls gravely ill and Gaius is busy trying to treat an outbreak in the lower town, Gwen steps in to help care for her sick friend. Delirium sets in and Gwen finds herself having to pretend to be Merlin's mother so he can say goodbye, even if it's not to the right person.

Summary
“Arthur,” said Leon, his voice thick with emotion that Arthur had rarely heard from him. “Let go.”
Someone else came and kneeled in front of Arthur. He thought distantly that it might have been Gwaine. Still, Arthur spared neither of the knights a glance nor a response as he cradled Merlin’s limp form closer to his chest. Maybe if Arthur held him close enough it would fill the gaping hole he felt where the king’s heart had surely been torn out.
“Arthur,” Leon said again, voice cracking this time as he spoke louder. He cleared his throat and continued. “You need to let him go. We need to take him home.”

Arthur didn't know how this had happened. It wasn't supposed to happen. Merlin wasn't meant to die.

Summary
“‘Not one for alcohol’, huh?” Arthur chuckled, holding out his goblet for Cordina to fill. The girl cast Merlin a curious look but kept her face downcast as she served the king, holding the pitcher securely with both hands to ensure no wine spilt. “No sense lying to the girl, Merlin, everyone knows how much time you spend in the tavern and you’re certainly not drinking water the whole time you’re there.”
For a moment Merlin was so overcome by confusion that he froze entirely, his brain turning Arthur’s words over again and again in an attempt to gain some sort of understanding of what the king was prattling on about. The lords and ladies at the table turned to face the two men, their attention caught by Arthur’s statement.
“The tavern?” Merlin’s face scrunched up as he searched Arthur’s face for any sign of a jest, only to find he was completely serious. “Why the hell would I be in the tavern?”
-
As the Golden Age begins, Merlin realizes that it will take a long time to tell Arthur everything that he's kept hidden from him over the years. Starting with the lies he wasn't even aware of. Why Gaius continuously chose the tavern as an excuse, Merlin can't be sure.

Summary
“What in the seven hells was that?” Leon exclaimed. Arthur watched Percival with a steady gaze.
“Growing up we called them Face Thieves,” said Percival with a grimace. “Awful creatures that take the form of the dead to steal the souls of the living. Face Thieves often target people that they can sense the most grief and sorrow in. It makes for easy prey.”
-
What was meant to be a simple quest to retrieve the ring of dispel turns sinister as Arthur, Merlin, and the knights venture deep into the Caves of Crasmere where they are hunted by spirits intent on stealing their souls.
