It took him a few minutes to calm himself, wiping his eyes of excess water he sobered and stared blankly at Death, “You mean to tell me, that goddamn Tom Marvolo fucking Riddle jr. is my soulmate? The same mass-murdering psychopath, who attacked an infant over a shitty prophecy that a drunk off her ass on cooking sherry, Sybill Trelawney projectile vomited into Albus Dumbledore’s ear? The same idiot Dark lord of the century, Lord bloody Voldemort?”

“It’s colder than a banker’s heart on foreclosure day out there,” Wayne called out as he returned to the trailer after almost an hour of fiddling with the Mayfield’s dodgy boiler that the landlord was refusing to mend because ‘was it really that bad?’.
Wayne was surprised that Eddie wasn't responding but he quickly realised why when he turned around and saw his nephew standing there with what must have been three jackets, a scarf, two hats and multiple pairs of mismatched gloves on.
“Fuck,” Wayne muttered, looking over him.
“Steve isn't home yet,” was all Eddie said and Wayne noticed that he was holding his van keys in his overly gloved hand.
“Son…” Wayne trailed off, unable to bring the words into reality that they both knew were on his mind. That it was too dangerous, that his van wouldn't make it out of the trailer park, that he wouldn't be able to see the road, that there was no way he’d be any use to Steve going out there.

In the aftermath of Eddie’s death, of the gates opening, Steve is struggling. His bat bites refuse to heal, he can’t let go of Eddie’s bloodied vest, and his dreams are plagued by visions of Eddie, by the Upside Down, by a creature that stalks him through the night.
Until one night, at the end of his tether, Steve returns to the Upside Down to search for the man he’d left behind.

There was no reason for them to come back, not now Vecna had opened up Hawkins to his own version of hell, countless people and homes lost into the abyss, the Harrington home included.
And Steve does what he does best.
Carries on. Acts like nothing is wrong. Volunteers at the shelter - ignores the fact that he is now homeless, avoids his unprocessed trauma - and folds laundry.
