"Through the steamy streets, small clusters of the most respectable Kerch citizens paraded their veneration of the God of industry, commerce and trade before their peers. Men correctly attired in uniformly crisp black suits, diligently blotted away perspiration with fine linen kerchiefs. Women proudly adorned in the colours of profit itself - the gold of coin, the purple of kruge - feverishly fluttered fans as they smiled and preened demurely. Children groomed, polished and buttoned strictly into impractical garments of velvet and lace - were called to heel, grasped firmly by the hand and cajoled into petulant obeisance. A sea of righteous, upstanding citizens, each thankfully too preoccupied with their own matters of significance to pay much heed to the trio of figures making their way along the periphery of the crowd."

Summary
Kaz Brekker signed a contract when he was 13 years old, and he's been indentured to Pekka Rollins at the Sweet Shop for almost 8 years. When he's assigned to seduce someone at one of Pekka's parties, he meets Inej Ghafa, the Banshee of the Barrel, and tells her he can help her. She decides to take him up on that.

Summary
Inej has just come back from her first successful voyage across the True Sea. She continues on her mission to hunt down slavers, leading her to the south side of Kerch. Kaz is nowhere to be found in Ketterdam, and she can't help to wonder where they stand now.
In the meantime, Kaz has shut himself away in Lij for some unconventional self-therapizing, and things start to spin out of control.
Until one fateful night in a sea of wheatgrass...
