Summary
Arthur is only trying to protect his idiot flat mate from a deranged person who claims to be a witch. But then she goes and blasts him with a "hug or die" curse. Not only does this force Arthur to swallow his pride and seek hugs from those who care from him, but also it turns his rationalist world view on its head. Despite all his best efforts to deny the fact, he's forced to confront the idea that maybe, just maybe, Merlin wasn't kidding about having magic after all.

Summary
Merlin - lover of crunchy fried snacks and secret admirer of his straight flat mate, Arthur - never expected to have a career in comedy. But after trying stand-up on a successful open mic night at university, he finds himself hooked. He and Arthur run a successful late night talk radio show for a while, but Arthur’s father intervenes. After a misunderstanding forces them into conflict, Merlin vows never to see Arthur again, to protect his own soft, pathetic, pining heart. Which would be fine, if the UK comedy circuit weren’t so small. But for some reason, they keep bumping into one another - at comedy festivals, and on radio and TV panel shows - and despite everything, the chemistry that made their radio show so popular in the distant past grows stronger than ever.

Except there he was, crimson cape like a beacon, arriving on the bright, golden day before the feast of flowers. Just in time to greet his subjects, to kiss his husband of ten years or of three and a half weeks, depending on how one counted, and then open the wine casks and descend into revelry.

“I need a fake boyfriend.” Arthur peered up at Merlin. Silence stretched between them. Then, the penny dropped.
“No,” Merlin said. “Absolutely not.”
“Please?”
“No! You’re my best mate, it would be weird.”
“I already told him my boyfriend is a biologist by the name of Marvin who works in a science lab studying animals.”
“I’m touched you modelled your fake boyfriend after me, but I’m a cryptozoologist studying magical creatures. And my name is not Marvin.”
“I’ll tell him he misheard.”Uther wants to see his son married. Arthur doesn't want to marry any of the women he's set up with (or any woman at all). Merlin agrees to a stupid, stupid plan.

Summary
Even were they not outnumbered - Arthur's experience is in managing skirmishes. In war, he has facilitated the strategies of more senior commanders, if one is being generous. He has not led campaigns.
The faces Merlin sees around him are appropriately grey. Or perhaps it is only that the fog is veiling them, steaming off the water to spread over the banks of the river and under the feet of the men.
