Summary
Pete has always been an overachiever. The young mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has spent his entire life laser focused on work. Between school, internships, military service and a political career, he never had time for a personal life. All that is about to change. In the span of a few weeks, Pete goes from carrying a gun in Afghanistan wondering if he will make it home alive, to realizing he only has one life and he needs to make the most of it. It doesn't help matters that he's still in the closet.
After finally finding his place in the world as a teacher, Chasten is ready to settle down with a husband, a dog and some kids. A quiet and drama-free life is what he craves. Why did the cutest guy on his new dating app have to be a popular politician?
This is a biographical romance, based on true events. Some creative license has been taken with the story to fill in the gaps of missing information. If you have knowledge on anything I got wrong, please send me a PM and I will fix it. Thank you!

Maybe the syllables should taste bitter on their way out. Maybe the pet-name soaked in nights spent cocooned between the rustle of tree branches and wrap of sleeping bags, in utter familiarity and knowingness, should remind Alex of everything Henry has stopped being to him.

“Hey, baby.” Alex removed the mug of tea from Henry’s hands to place it down on the kitchen counter, and wrapped his hands gently around his husband’s waist, pulling him closer. “I was thinking.”
“Always dangerous,” Henry said cheekily, lowering his head to give Alex a chaste kiss on his forehead.
Alex ignored him. “We have some free time this weekend. You’re home, I’m home. What if we…”
Henry leaned back, eyebrows raised. “In front of the children?”
“Well, I was thinking with the children. They’re old enough to help now.”
“Love, I’m begging you to go back and finish that sentence.”
“What if we put up the Christmas tree?”
“Oh.”
“You thought I meant…” Alex trailed off, a grin spread wide across his face.
“You nearly always mean that.”

Summary
When Zahra, the leader of the Fireflies, makes a deal with Alex to smuggle some guy outside of the D.C. Quarantine Zone’s walls, Alex immediately says no. He doesn’t move people, not anymore. Not since his ridiculous, and definitely past-tense, savior complex got him into hot water with June.
What could possibly be so special about some scrawny refugee? When he had his gun pointed at Henry, the expression on Zahra’s face was not one he’d ever seen on her before. She desperately needs him alive. For once, just this once, Zahra isn’t the savior today. It’s Henry.
