Jing Yuan watched the birds fluttering outside the window and Yanqing watched him. A finch hops onto the bird feeder and warbles a little song, and Jing Yuan blinks two times fast. Yanqing wants to smile, but he can't, and Jing Yuan isn't looking at him anyway.
Jing Yuan used to peel oranges for Yanqing, but now Yanqing peels them for him.

Summary
Gaia can't be saved, Jenova's poison too far reaching and Sephiroth tied too closely to her Chosen One. Unable to break that bond, she chooses to steer into it. She completes their bond fully and sends Cloud back in time. This time, if one is killed, the other is halved. Cloud can work with that.
Sephiroth gains knowledge of this bond in vague dreams. A blonde warrior who is a sight to behold, but whose death would mean his own. If he is real, he must protect him at all costs.
Too bad nobody told Cloud what Sephiroth wants.
Or; that one time-travel fic where Cloud is just trying to save Gaia whilst avoiding Sephiroth until last. Sephiroth is just trying to find and protect the blonde warrior whose life is inexplicably tied to his own.

Raine can see his stupid grin even through the phone.
He doesn't say anything, just tightens his fists and grits his teeth. He feels like he might be about to break the phone if he holds it any tighter.
“Yoshimaru-chan? Are you there, yon?’
The urge to throw the phone against the wall is strong, as is the urge to take his bike and ride to Gunma just to strangle Kiji.
“What the hell, you bastard”, he just says.
And then hangs up.

“I’m not cheating on you, Yoshimaru-chan”, he says, as seriously as he can, because it is important that Yoshimaru understands this.
“You kind of are though”.
“Cheating on you would mean that I’m considering someone else my sworn rival, that there’s someone else I'd compare to you in terms of racing against”, he says. “And I'm not”.
Yoshimaru is looking at him again now, his frown has softened and he looks a little more relaxed; it seems like he’s considering his words, so Kiji keeps going.
“I’m just trying it out, I wanna see if I can do it, yon”.
He has the sudden and fierce urge to reach out across the table and take Yoshimaru’s hand in his. Just to complete the picture. He has the feeling Yoshimaru wouldn’t pull away.
“I’m always coming back to you, Yoshimaru-chan”.
