James Fitzjames’ clenched fist almost moves in slow motion as it slams onto the table, the thud reverberating through Francis Crozier’s chest. He does not flinch; rather, he is watching a fleck of spittle fly from Fitzjames’ lips as he enunciates the last sound of the word. It lands in a neat dot on the dark wood. Crozier feels slightly disappointed that it did not fly toward him. A lock of Fitzjames’ moronic curled hair falls in front of his eyes as he makes contact with the solid surface.

I think about how it was you, but not really. That the you that sits beside me is an echo of an echo, and how I love you most all the same. I think of you and try to give you all the things I want and things I need and I try to be sneaky about it.
