“Merlin. You know I’m not afraid of you.”
...Arthur was reminded of the unfairness that had been lying under the surface all this time. All of Merlin’s struggles, and his dedication beyond what anyone else ever did. It had never been a manservant's duties to ride with Arthur and the knights—on patrols, quests, fighting magical beasts. Merlin had always come along anyway, and all those times Arthur assumed he was cowering in the trees, Merlin had always been fighting silently next to him.
“I've seen much of violent magic,” Arthur said. “And little of anything else.”
“Most people haven't.” Merlin laughed, the sound bitter. “You would be less afraid of it, if you saw what it could do. What I could do.”
...“What can you do, then?” He took a controlled breath. “You could show me.”
Post-Camlann Golden Age AU. Despite lifting the ban on magic, and naming Merlin Court Sorcerer, Arthur is still afraid of magic. No matter what he tells himself.
