  3. Help Yourself to a Bit of Everything, Sect Leader Jiang by

    Summary

    My goal here is two-fold: Firstly, I wanted our favorite sect leader to have an opportunity to sample every dish at the buffet. *giggles* Secondly, I wanted to encourage myself to write some characters and pairings I've been avoiding, for one reason or another.

    I chose 7 characters to pair with Jiang Cheng; Nie Mingjue, Jin Zixuan, Lan Wangji, Nie Huaisang, Jin Guangyao, Lan Xichen, and Wei Wuxian. I also took 7 prompts (I used a 'Three Noun' random prompt generator, found here, without cheating or skipping, and then randomly assigned those prompt selections to the pairings. (The stories will not be related to each other.))

    Here are the fruits of my labor, to be posted as they are completed. <3 I truly hope you enjoy the meal.

    2021.03.11 ETA: I have several other pairings I might add to this series as the urge arises, so please feel free to subscribe/bookmark if you'd like! My thoughts right now are kinda... Wen Ning-shaped, maybe some Lan Jingyi, maybe some Lan Qiren, hell I don't even know. The fictional world is my oyster.

    Generally, Shen Qingqiu only visits him at work when he’s really got something to yell about—protagonist dick size or sex pollen caves or weird poisons that Shang Qinghua forgot to invent cures to, or something. Today, he says, “Look, there’s news and I thought you should hear it from me.”

    Shang Qinghua doesn’t look up from his papers at first. “Okay, sure,” he says, absently—how much money are they spending on incense again? Absolutely fucking absurd—and glances up when Shen Qingqiu remains silent. “What is it?”

    Shen Qingqiu folds the fan and taps it nervously against his palm. “Mobei-jun’s getting married,” he says.

    Delicious read. The characters are doing things we don't necessarily expect them to do, but it is all beautifully in-character, and makes everyone (not just SQH and MBJ) feel more likable. I love the tension in this; the author's note mentioned something about a 'divorced' vibe even though moshang were not married, and this fic carries that out perfectly. There's so much hurt here, and anger, and desire and love. Scrumptious.

    Absolutely fucking CHARMING JC POV, with so much bitching and snarking and fighting and also tenderness and sweetness, and, of course, hot sex. The A/B/O dynamics are handled in a really interesting way here, too. Still *important*, but no one is like, a slavering beast or anything. This was an absolute pleasure to read, and I am saying that being someone who does not typically seek out A/B/O stories.

    From his job in the Armitage L train station booth, Wei Ying has watched The Most Beautiful Man In The World ride the train at 8 am and 4:30 pm for years, always in perfect suits, always with perfect hair, always with a perfect smile.

    He's going to marry that guy someday. So what if he doesn't know his name. Names have nothing to do with true love.

    When he saves His Future Husband from being squished by a train, Wei Ying finds himself engulfed in a tsunami of Lans who think he really is going to marry Mr. Wonderful, Lan Xichen, their son/brother/uncle/nephew. Despite himself, Wei Ying likes belonging to them. Except for the lying. Except for the guilt. Except for the fact that he took one look at his pretend-fiancé's brother, Lan Zhan, and maybe, MAYBE fell stupidly, hopelessly in love.

    He can't tell them. He can't not tell them. How could this possibly get any worse??? (spoiler alert: it gets worse)

    Beautiful, impeccable hurt/comfort. A rich story, full of so many details in both setting and characterization. A true pleasure to read. Even the 'side' characters feel as if they have depth.

    This is probably the best hanahaki fic I have ever read. It has all the delicious longing and pining, but with the way the premise/story is set up, it is able to completely side-step all of the frustrating 'dear GOD would you just TELL him' vibes normal hanahaki has, and because of that, it reads as far more realistic and emotionally intelligent. The writing is fantastic, the story is compelling, the characters are all portrayed in tender, lovable ways (even LWJ's family, who arguably could have been vilified). It is also lovely to see these characters we know and love in a kinder world, and it softens them all in such wonderful ways. I'm certain I will re-read this.
