He didn’t think he’d ever be lonely enough for it, but here he is; here they are. Viktor cutting him open with the laser of the hexclaw, holding his hand as he works.
“You don’t know how long I’ve waited for this,” Viktor says. “I can’t believe you’re really here.”
The modulator strips most of the emotion from his voice but not all of it; never all of it. His tender Viktor is still in there. Jayce is sure of it.
He’s bet his life, more or less, on being sure of it.
Me too, Jayce wants to say, sick with anesthetic. Instead he squeezes Viktor’s hand.
“My darling,” Viktor says. “My Jayce.”
Then he pulls out Jayce’s heart.

Summary
Jayce was not a jealous man.
He had never been. It was against his nature. In the few relationships he’d had in the past, he’d never been possessive or overbearing or controlling. That would mean he thought he held some ownership over his partner, which could never be true. They were free to talk to and befriend whoever they liked, and he would trust that they would come back to him. That was who he was. Jayce didn’t get jealous.
So whatever emotion he was experiencing now, it was absolutely not jealousy.

Viktor asks: “What is it, Jayce?”
Briefly, Viktor expects he will receive an answer. Jayce looks at his wrist, then at him; but he smiles, weakly, and shakes his head.
“It’s nothing.” He now knows it is safe to say so. He pushes to his feet and touches Viktor’s shoulder. “Let’s go inside.”
In these moments, Viktor cannot refuse him. He follows Jayce, watches him retreat into the bedroom. Jayce wished for his partner back, but something else came with him. It cannot be seen, but it can be felt: the round, repellant force between two magnets. Too much has been revealed. Too little is known. This imbalance has manifested itself into a barrier, into a tangle, yet it is too tightly wound to be safely unraveled. It sits between them like a ghost; this entity, this unspoken thing.
