Summary
Jigen was stumped.
He felt he was a rather intelligent man. Smart enough to know how to drive, sail, or fly any vehicle, shoot any gun ever created, and even better; smart enough to let Lupin the Third do most of the thinking whenever possible.
But that was the issue. Because he couldn’t let Lupin handle this problem.

"It used to be different. Lupin had chased after him, once. They’d been boys, foolish and starving for something they didn’t know how to name. Even then, Lupin had been very charming. Persistently so. He’d wanted his attention badly enough to steal for it, to put himself in the way of gunfire for it. And Jigen had never been wanted before. Maybe that was why, despite everything, he’d let himself be charmed.
And then he’d stood by and watched Lupin use those exact same charms on woman after woman."

Jigen gets shot on the job. Laid up in a cheap hotel with a bullet in his leg, he wonders if he can keep doing this.
