Summary
Shapes swim beneath his eyes. He flutters them open, slowly, confusedly.
“Why didn’t you come today?”
Gingerly, he rises up, head swimming and mind briefly confused like pieces have been taken out of a previously completed puzzle. Where there was once flames and smoke, sunlight and wind caress his skin. For a moment, just a moment, he forgets who he is.
“Wh-who…?” Minho asks the blond teen next to him.
But the more they talk, everything suddenly snaps back into clarity.
(But why does something feel so off…? Why is he injured? What…? The more he tries to remember, the more it slips away like sand in his hands.
Something aches.)

Summary
There’s no time for an argument, Yuuji realizes. So he stays put, watching Fushiguro take off to fight that beast. He clenches his fists, ignoring the voice in his head telling him to save as many people as he can, to help them. He should just leave it to the pros, someone who’s strong and has a better chance at saving than he does. Besides, he reasons, it’s not like he’s particularly close with Sasaki and Iguchi in the first place.
But, his mind whispers, this type of death wouldn’t be proper.
He bends his knees.
Everyone dies, something that’s cementing in his brain.
He lets out a breath and jumps.
But the least he could do is guide them toward a proper death. Because this, this is unnatural and cruel and just wrong.

Yuuji swallows the finger.
And it's one of the worst things he could have done.

“With all those rules and regulations they tried to stuff down my throat?” Gojo scoffs, but his tone isn't harsh. “I made Gakuganji get a heart attack and almost die though, so I'd say my suffering wasn't in vain.”

“He was fine, Yuji.” And Gojo doesn't sound the slightest bit happy at that, just regretful, as if he wished he'd actually killed his grandfather with his antics.

He could never be alone; not with the presence that watched him with care and guided him with ease. Protected him and gave him the concern no one else could. Or had, for that matter.
Yuuji was never alone so long as he had that hand to cling onto. Though, unbeknownst to him, his life was about to get a bit more hectic.
